Back in the mid 90’s my friend Rob was running an export business in Thailand, he also had a pretty young Thai girlfriend so needless to say Rob needed to fly to Thailand – ALOT! Every January since 1979 the world’s best off-road drivers have gathered in France for the start of the most grueling off road endurance race known to man. First the crazed minds at The Adventurists brought you the Mongol Rally, now in their second offering they’ve upped the sillyness factor with The Rickshaw Run. This “race” pits you and your 7 horsepower, three wheeled Auto Rickshaw against thousands of miles of terrible roads, jungles, deserts, monsoons and every thing else the Indian subcontinent can throw in your face. Not a very fair match if you ask me!

The Mongol Rally is not as much a race as it is a framework for guaranteed Adventure. There are no prizes, no time limits, no support crews, no set courses and hardly any rules. So what’s the point? The mad adventure geniuses at the Adventurists (the event’s organizers) sum up the Rally’s philosophy quite eloquently…

It is often said that behind every great fortune lies a great crime. The twisted tale of Yamashita’s gold, allegedly buried in the Philippine islands, is a story of a great fortune and many crimes that became inseparably intertwined.
The tale begins with Japan’s plundering of its neighbors before and during World War II. As the Germans did in Europe, the Japanese squeezed vast fortunes from their Asian domain…

Emperor Maximilian of Mexico, standing before a firing squad, handed each of his executioners a gold coin and entreated them to shoot true… and preferably not in the head. The marksmen obliged, and on July 19, 1867, bullets ended Maximilian’s three-year career as Napoleon’s New World puppet.
